Ha.. of course I won't agree to say that HK can't give rise to world-class scientists since it is small and limited in resources too...

Back to a few of your examples first. Those few distinct athletes are more individual type of heros who dedicate themselves, it is not uncommon even for us to say that it would have been a lot easier for many other potentially talented athletes to rise if we have more systematic type of training and opportnities provided..... In short, the way that we are expecting an indigenous HK great athlete is not how, China and US say, engineer their athletes.
Back to economy, our main rise in terms of commerce was due to HK's position relative to China in the past, but we are losing that type of advantage now. And people's quality in China is rapidly catching up. We do have advantage over things like the financial industry, but the problem is that not every HK guy is working in those fields.... the available opportunities are too limited in terms of what our education has actually enabled us, and what a modern economic entity would talk about. We do have world-class coverage and quality in education, but we don't have world-class economic structure (in terms of variety) to support it thereafter. That is why in HK, studying for a Ph.D. is close to meaning the end of your scientific career, while in the US it is the beginning of your career. Where are the opportunities afterwards?
Back to the wide acclaim of HK movie industry in the US, actually the westerners are only amazed at things like wuxia pian and kungfu, etc., they scarcely know anything beyond. And in terms of their curiosity toward Asia, Chinese and Korean movies are indeed gaining more attention now...
Back to football, the European ones have definitely suggest that one needs to break away from the boundary of nation to really rise....

What I am talking about as "too small" is about the lack of a suitable "system" of doing things that can give rise to things a lot more naturally, even in an environment lack of individual heros. This is how the modern world functions, specifically, ORCHESTRATED COLLECTIVE EFFORTS which arise naturally. We have by far the strongest research capability in this age now, although you hear no Einstein!
Today science and technology is a good example, it is not uncommon for a particular problem to draw in efforts from very distinct fields of study. For example, control is an important branch of engineering with which the methodology is being used in every engineering branch. The tradition of control though, lies in things like military applications, space science, etc. This is not what science and technology can effectively do if we focus ourselves in just HK; we don't even have army, there is no market to do research on those stuffs, right? And that presents as one of our fundamental limitations.
So, the whole thing is not on the level of individual ability and so forth, rather it is the "system aspect" I am talking about. Something which I am a bit uneasy in HK is that when we try to distinguish ourselves from especially the mainland, we do it in a way of separation; are we strong enough to join their main current and yet be able to distinguish ourselves? This is what I see as a real challenge.

actually i think system development is always our strength.
why can we develop a great political and legislative system for our society, but not the field of soccer?
^^
well done. great job!
